Life Insurance for People With Chronic Bronchitis

I Have Chronic Bronchitis. Now What?

Chronic bronchitis can be a problem especially if other factors are present. For example, if this disease is a result of, or related to, smoking then this is of concern to life insurance companies. Or, if your chronic bronchitis is complicating another condition such as asthma this too will be of concern. Allow extra time in the application process for the life insurance company to obtain and review your medical records. Also, expect to pay more for life insurance depending on the severity of your condition.

Chronic Bronchitis’ Effect on Insurance Rates

Here is a very rough idea of what type of ratings to expect for chronic bronchitis. Do note that if smoking and/or other diseases are complications to your condition, then these will be evaluated in conjunction with your chronic bronchitis, which will worsen your ratings.

Condition

Expected Rating

Mild chronic bronchitis; minimal reduction in lung functionality

Standard

Average chronic bronchitis; some reduction in lung functionality

More Information on Chronic Bronchitis

Bronchitis is an inflammation of the large airways that extend off the trachea. This condition is often caused by infection but can also be a result of irritation from particles or gas. When symptoms last 90 days or longer then the bronchitis is usually classified as being “acute.” Bronchitis lasting longer, for either months or years, is then classified as being “chronic.” When chronic bronchitis also decreases airflow this is classified as a defining characteristic of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

Important Things to Know for Those with Chronic Bronchitis

What are some of the issues that interest underwriters?

  • What are the results of your most recent pulmonary function test?

  • Do you smoke? Do you use any other tobacco products?

  • What kind of medication are you on?

  • How often do you visit the doctor for this condition?

What can I do to help the underwriting process?

The life insurance company will need contact information for all your treating physicians and medical facilities that you have visited. A pulmonary function test will also likely be required in order to assess the functionality of your lungs.
